The latest installment in our Making of a Neurosurgeon series brings you the story of Dr. Donald O. Quest.

In 1952, Quest began at a small Midwestern high school. Sixty years later, in 2012, he received the Cushing Medal—the highest honor awarded by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons—for his dedication to the field of neurosurgery.

In this story, you’ll learn about the fascinating route he took over those 60 years, what else he’s done along the way (hint: a lot) and what drives Dr. Quest as a neurosurgeon, a teacher, a team player and a mentor.

Dr. Quest says that as he mentors medical students and new neurosurgeons, he strives to pass along four crucial points: “Have empathy, care for patients, use good judgment and do the very best work you can.”
